National Healthcare System: Employee Engagement

A national healthcare system seeking to enhance its workplace engagement commissioned Gallup to create an employee engagement initiative. The goal: to enhance the organisation's financial performance by increasing employee engagement.

Gallup consultants worked with client management to implement a performance management system at all organisational levels. Gallup's comprehensive programme began by measuring employee engagement and included follow-up analysis, executive consulting, manager training, and manager intervention.

Gallup Business Impact Analysis for one large regional hospital demonstrated how employee engagement linked to crucial business outcomes. As part of its analysis, hospital management provided Gallup with workers' compensation claims data for four quarters following implementation of Gallup's performance management solution. Gallup analysis revealed:

  • A direct linkage exists between employee engagement and workers' compensation claims. Workgroups in the top 50% of employee engagement scores averaged 2.05 fewer claims during the four quarters analysed than did workgroups in the bottom 50% of employee engagement scores.
  • Workgroups in the bottom 50% of employee engagement experienced accident rates nearly three times higher than that of workgroups in the top 50%.
  • Workgroups in the top 25% of employee engagement scores had 3.64 fewer accidents per workgroup per year than the workgroups in the bottom 25% of employee engagement scores. Workgroups in the top 50% of employee engagement experienced declining claims rate over the four quarters, demonstrating that as teams increased their engagement levels, workers' compensation claims decreased.
