The Relationship between Engagement at Work and Organisational Outcomes

James K. Harter, Ph.D., Gallup / Frank L. Schmidt, Ph.D., University of Iowa / Emily A. Killham, M.A., Gallup / Sangeeta Agrawal, M.S., Gallup

Objective: Business and work units within the same organisation vary substantially in their levels of engagement and performance.

The purpose of this study was to examine:

  1. The true relationship between employee engagement and performance in 152 organisations.
  2. The consistency or generalisability of the relationship between employee engagement and performance across organisations.
  3. The practical meaning of the findings for executives and managers.

Conclusion: The relationship between engagement and performance at the business/work unit level is substantial and highly generalisable across organisations. Employee engagement is related to each of nine different performance outcomes. This means that practitioners can apply the Q12 measure in a variety of situations with confidence that the measure captures important performance-related information.

Please read the Meta-Analysis White Paper for further details of this study. This is particularly aimed at the analytical and academic types of people within your organisation. It also includes the history on the development of the Q12.
